Argentina’s ruling party suffers a severe setback in the legislative elections in the province of Buenos Aires ahead of the national elections.

The counting of more than 86% of the votes revealed on Sunday that President Javier Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), won 33.85% in the legislative elections in the province of Buenos Aires, the country’s most populous district.

According to the first results, the Peronist coalition Fuerza Patria, headed by Axel Kicillof, Cristina Kirchner and Sergio Massa, obtained 46.93% of the votes in six of the eight electoral sections.

Local media described the event as “a bitter day” for La Libertad Avanza, in which the fractions Somos, with 5.41%; the left, with 4.37%; Potencia, with 1.41%, and Unión Libertad, with 1.34% were further behind.

As reported by the report, the result is the biggest electoral blow for Milei since he assumed the presidency in December 2023, who acknowledged on the same day the defeat of his party: “Today we have had a clear defeat,” he said.

For his part, the governor of the province and the leader of Peronism, Axel Kicillof, celebrated the victory of Fuerza Patria, stressing that what happened sends a clear message:

I tell Milei: Milei, the people gave you an order, you cannot govern for outsiders, for corporations, for those who have more. Listen to the people,” he said.

According to the expert, the austerity policies of the Milei government, economic stagnation and the recent scandal of alleged corruption involving both him and his sister have affected the results of the legislative elections in Buenos Aires.
